Orphan Colours Friday 12th January 2018
“Breezy, carefree and unpretentious, something unique. Great song writing, performed for sheer love, without an agenda in sight” – Clash Magazine.
Orphan Colours are Steve Llewellyn, Dave Burn, Fred Abbott, Steve Brookes and Graham Knight,
After the indefinite hiatus in 2013 of UK Alternative Country/ Americana outfit Ahab, songwriter Steve Llewellyn went on to form a new band (Orphan Colours) with the help of former Ahab member Dave Burn. Being firmly a part of the London music scene made it easy to get involved in collaborations with other bands. Steve and Dave met up again with drummer Steve Brookes, who had also been in Ahab.
A contact of Brookes later led to a meeting between Llewellyn and Noah and the Whale guitarist Fred Abbott. The latter was in the middle of auditioning lead singers for his solo project, and the two found common ground in their appreciation of, amongst others, Tom Petty and Jason Isbell. When Abbott heard Llewellyn’s demos for the new Orphan Colours project he immediately signed up. Graham Knight was then drafted in on bass and vocals, having played shows with Ahab in 2012, he was an obvious fit and Orphan Colours were born.
The band have impressive credentials, with Llewellyn and Burn having honed their song writing craft during their time with Ahab, who swiftly built up a reputation as an unmissable live act. Their performance at Cropredy in 2012 paved the way for a collaboration with the legendary producer John Leckie and being championed by Radio 2’S Bob Harris. The band went on to play successful tours in the UK, Denmark, Germany and Australia, and notable festivals such as Bestival, Green Man and Wilderness.
Abbott’s Noah and the Whale played world tours and shows at the Royal Albert Hall, Lollapoloza and Glastonbury as well as appearing on shows such as The Late Show with Graham Letterman, Later with Jools Holland and The Graham Norton Show.
With gleaming commercial success, critical acclaim and rock-solid credibility firmly in their DNA, Orphan Colours are bound for success. Their debut EP was released in February 2016, and followed up by an ‘Acoustic EP’ in December 2017. Their debut album is due for release in November 2017 and will showcase it on their UK Tour in January and February 2018.
Support will come from Rachel Croft from York. Rachel is an extremely talented musician and song writer with an angelic voice. She is a regular performer at the city’s music venues and can be regularly seen busking in the city centre. She is also the lead vocalist for the Croft Mullen Band.
