THE ALAN HULL SONGBOOK
We are delighted to present a unique performance of familiar and lost songs written by Alan Hull and performed by the current lead singer of Lindisfarne and son-in-law of Alan, Dave Hull Denholm and the band’s bass player Ian Thomson. Their performance at Town Hall Live is just before Lindisfarne’s 2024 UK Tour of O2 Academies including Sheffield, Leicester, and Bournemouth.
Dave gained a unique insight into the music and mind set of Alan whilst working as his sideman for two years or so before the untimely death of Alan in 1995 at the age of 50.
A few years later Dave uncovered 120 tapes containing demos of songs written by Alan between 1967 and 1969. Whilst, sadly, the tapes had deteriorated, the quality of the writing was not in doubt. With fellow Lindisfarne band member Ian, the pair set about faithfully re-recording some of the songs. Many familiar Hull themes were present in the songs, from the abstract to the prosaic – passing time, introspection, light, weather all featuring heavily along with lyrical phrases that were to re-surface in later material.
The result was that in 2016 the pair recorded and released an album of 12 songs called ‘Some Other Time’. It is a poignant reminder that Alan remains as one of the UK’s most prolific and best loved songwriters. The songs retain the essence and purity in a stripped-down form, delivered with honesty and unparalleled musicality. Tellingly, one must remind oneself that it is not Alan Hull singing and playing, so uncannily and naturally has Dave reproduced Alan’s vocals. Ian’s skilled accompaniment and moving string arrangements also compliment the songs perfectly.
Live Dave, on guitar and keyboards and Ian, on bass and upright bass play a sizeable repertoire of songs and many of Lindisfarne’s classic songs penned by Alan, such as Lady Eleanor, Clear White Light, Winter Song and Fog on the Tyne, to present an unforgettable experience.
